Conversations with Activists to Inspire Global Change with Van of Urantia provides a forum for activists to voice their concerns, and to educate the public about humanitarian issues.
In this episode, Van of Urantia interviews Dennis Banks, a member of the Ojibwe people and longtime co-founder and civil rights leader of the American Indian Movement. Banks was a lifelong activist for Native American rights, author, lecturer, and teacher. A no-nonsense freedom fighter, Banks was part of the 71-day armed take over of Wounded Knee at the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1973 along with Russell Means, Clyde Bellecourt, and approximately 200 other Native American activists in a protest against both the tribal and U.S. governments.
Before Wounded Knee, he participated in the 1969-71 occupation by Native Americans of Alcatraz Island. And in 1972 he helped lead a takeover of the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in Washington, D.C., a protest dubbed the “Trail of Broken Treaties.”
Van of Urantia first met Dennis Banks in Sedona, Arizona at Future Studios where they connected as fellow activists and leaders for justice. In 2016 Dennis was the keynote speaker at the Purification Gathering at Avalon Organic Gardens & EcoVillage in Southern Arizona, founded by Van of Urantia. The Purification Gathering hosted Native American elders, artists, musicians, dancers, and activists from 16 different tribes over 4 days.
